The 20/30 Club is hosting an unprecedented weekend event this February. Scores of Web developers, programmers, graphic designers and other passionate members of the community are coming together for a weekend to build a Web site for the Cleveland Professional 20/30 Club. At the end of the weekend, the new site will debut. Once polished and launched after the event, the source code will be shared with any Northeast Ohio young professional group who asks.
Similar to a Habitat for Humanity-type of event, each volunteer will help with various aspects of the project. We will have six teams, each focused on a specific part of the site. These teams are:
-
Project Management Team (They keep everything moving forward)
-
Graphic Design Team
-
Ruby Team (Software Development)
-
Database Team
-
Quality Assurance Team (They test the site for errors and usability; a non-technical team)
-
Event Team (They make sure the event itself goes off well; quite non-technical)
The technology we are using is open source, meaning the source code is freely available to the public. Various components of the site will be able to interact with other Web sites to share information such as calendars, event registration and interests. This means that a user of the 20/30 Club's new site can view events hosted by the Young Professionals of Akron, games dates for the Cavs or Indians, events at University Circle, Beachwood Chamber events, etc. Users can filter these events based on interest and history. It will be a whole new level of functionality for non-profits and organizations in Northeast Ohio.
If you have never heard of an idea like this, well, that is true. According some connected people in the national tech scene, something like this has never been done. There have been similar events such as GiveCamp (http://bit.ly/9eQjEw) Coding for a Cause (http://bit.ly/9HOBUv) that have set the example, however, what we are doing under the banner of the 20/30 Club is unprecedented.
The event will be held from February 26 to the 28th at LeanDog Software (they took over the old Hornblower's boat by Burke Airport). The event starts at 5PM that Friday and will conclude at 9PM on Sunday. The site debuts at 7PM Sunday night. Free parking is available for the weekend.
